The history of De Havixhorst goes back to the Middle Ages. Farmers settled on the high land on the banks of the Reest stream, that since time immemorial has formed the boundary between the provinces of Drenthe and Overijssel. The castle there has been in the possession of the family De Vos van Steenwijk since the 17th century, for more than three hundred years. In 1982 this historical building was completely restored for exclusive use as château-hotel and –restaurant.
