Sogndalstrand is an old port from the days when the sailing ships trafficked the coast of Norway, stopping off to rest along the way. In 1994, the entire area was protected by the Directorate for Cultural Heritage, and a unique hotel was born. Enthusiasts Eli Laupstad Omdal and Jan Oddvar Omdal opened their Krambu cafe in June 1994 as an idealistic effort to profile this unique location with its history of the days of sailing. This was a village falling into disrepair, and something had to be done.

Today, Sogndalstrand Kulturhotell comprises 8 different buildings with 15 rooms, restaurant, bakers, conference room, prison pub and more. The oldest building dates back to 1831. When the hotel opened, it encouraged other members of the tiny community to invest in the area - Galleri Rosengren and Madam Kiellands Café to mention just a few. Sogndalstrand has now developed into a symbol for tourism in the region of Rogaland and is signposted with the brown cultural signs for attractions along the main roads, E39 and RV 44.
