Gostra del Saracino,: Arezzo, Italy

18 June 2022

What’s on? What’s on? If Middle Age athletics are your thing, look up the Giostra del Saracino - Italy’s foremost jousting event, which takes place in the Piazza Grande in Arezzo (a charming city that’s well worth exploring in its own right). Here, you can watch ‘medieval knights’ battle it out to win the most ‘points’ and a glorious (metaphoric) crown. You’ll be blown away by the ambience: the whole city gets involved in this twice-annual event, from the hundreds of people who dress up in medieval costume to the flag throwing demonstration that occurs moments before the tournament. Keep some space clear in June or September if you plan on going.

Where to stay: Embrace the medieval theme by spending a night or two at the 13th century castle, Castello di Gargonza. This fortified village once played host to Dante Alighieri, along with a whole host of historic characters which the property’s rooms are named after. Other areas, including a panoramic swimming pool and medieval tower, take this heritage-steeped hotel to the next level.

In fact, if it weren’t for the hotel’s modern amenities and contemporary comforts, you might feel as though you’ve been sent back in time on walking through its doors. The owners, the Schick family, are avid antique collectors, and there are precious objects such as silver, porcelain, glassware, clocks and furniture nearly everywhere you look. A true treat for the history lover.
