It represented the very centre of culture in Bergen for a period of time. During the second half of the 18th century, it was home to both Det Harmoniske Selskab and Det Dramatiske Selskab, amateur musical and theatre groups respectively.
Today, the six-room basement building is once again a "public house", with its beamed ceilings in the two largest rooms and brick vaults in the remaining rooms, the traditional fireplace and new bar – this is an exclusive wine bar and brasserie.
Altona is the only restaurant in Bergen to achieve a Wine Spectator certificate and has more than 1,300 labels .
The restaurant has also been appointed membership in Smak av Kysten (a gastronomic network which translates as Taste of the Coast) and takes great pride in preparing all the best seasonal produce from Norway's coast. Sample seasonal delights – cod fresh from the winter seas, spring herring and cusk, summer mackerel and autumn shellfish feasts.
Altona offers an à la carte menu and has separate rooms for private groups
