Building: 1288

A treasure of East Ireland, Barberstown Castle was one of the first great Irish country houses to display its splendour to the outside world when it opened as a small guesthouse in 1971. Over eight centuries, it’s kept the spirit of its historic past alive across a variety of unique spaces, ranging from Victorian and Elizabethan extensions to an original mediaeval castle keep that dates back to 1288. This castle hotel was also once the home of the famous musician, Eric Clapton, who used to play music with visiting rock stars until the early hours!

Now, we’re delighted to welcome intrepid spirits to Barberstown Castle, and go the extra mile to make sure you have the time of your life when you book one of our rooms – from advising you on how to make the most of surrounding Kildare, to treating your tastebuds and so much more. You can even rent out our castle hotel for free in its entirety – putting it at the heart of your next celebration. At our historic hotel, going above and beyond your wildest expectations is just part of what we do…

ROOMS & SUITES

Each era of the castle’s history is reflected in the style of our country house bedrooms, which are named after its previous owners including Nicholas Barby in 1300 and Eric Clapton in 1979. You’ll find old-world character and original antiques – along with a wide selection of modern amenities – within.

RESTAURANT

The Barton Rooms Restaurant obtained its name from Mr. Hugh Barton, who completed the last wing of the main house in the 1830s. Our Head Chef, Bertrand Malabhat, uses the finest locally-sourced produce to create country house classics that blend Irish and French cuisine, which you can savour alongside perfectly paired wines. We also offer Sunday Lunch, a garden bar and afternoon tea.
