‘s Hertogenbosch, as the city Den Bosch is historically called, owes its name to the Dukes of Brabant that had built a hunting lodge on this spot where the rivers “Dommel” and “Aa” merge. Thus, the city was dubbed ‘s Hertogen’s Bosch (translated: the Dukes’ forest). The dukes of Brabant needed a political centre to control the northern part of their duchy. To this day it remains the bustling capital of the province of North Brabant.

Or visit the fortifications surrounding the city centre by boat, bicycle or foot.
