Rathmullan House

Rathmullan House is a charming 4-star hotel overlooking Lough Swilly

Building: 1760

In Donegal we like to say that up here it’s different, and at Rathmullan House we are proud to say that over the past 50 years, we have always tried to offer something a little bit original. Set in tranquil wooded grounds overlooking Lough Swilly and at the beginning of Ireland's Wild Atlantic Way coastline, our setting is idyllic, but it is our welcome that sets us apart.

Bob and Robin Wheeler bought the house in 1962. After extensive work transforming the dormitories back into the original bedrooms they opened the house as a 22-bedroom hotel. The original pavilion dining room designed by the late Dr Liam Mc Cormick was built in 1969 with a swimming pool and a new bedroom wing added in the 1990’s. In 2004, the new regency bedroom wing was added along with The Gallery Room and the Cook & Gardener restaurant was renovated and redesigned.

With the second generation of the Wheeler family now looking after the 4-star hotel, the family feel that our regular visitors know so well has remained. Seamus the donkey is no longer around to carry guests’ luggage from Rathmullan pier, but our staff are always more than happy to help where they can. While the hotel has retained its classic features and traditional elements, our bedrooms have all of the modern touches that our discerning guests would expect.

When you arrive to spend the night at Rathmullan House, we make it our priority to remove you from the real world and allow you to spend your time in total relaxation and serenity.
Every room at Rathmullan House is individual and if you asked 100 regular guests for their favourite bedroom or lounge, you would most likely struggle to find two identical answers. Exploring Rathmullan House may lead you to a quiet corner in Batts Bar with a good book, or to long afternoon stroll through our extensive gardens. We like to think that our house offers something new to discover on every stay regardless of how many years you have been visiting and this is certainly the feedback that our regular guests offer.

There is something to excite all visitors to Rathmullan House from toddlers to seasoned travellers and everybody in between.

Our reputation for fine food using local ingredients has been cultivated over the past 50 years. We like to think that guests need not leave the grounds of the hotel other than to see the beautiful sights of Donegal, as all culinary needs are provided for in Rathmullan House.

Fresh fruit and veg in our walled garden, fresh fish landed on our doorstep, fresh dough made for the Tap Room every morning and fresh ideas from our talented chef's from season to season. The ingredients are all there for us to provide high quality food for our guests, whether it is a light afteroon snack, a casual supper or a formal evening celebration.

The Tap Room which opened in 2014 has already been recognised by the McKennas Guide as one of the top 100 places to eat in Ireland. Serving stone baked pizza and local craft beer is not what you might expect to find in a classic country house. Still in its infancy, it appears that this ambitious marriage of styles is exactly what our guests and locals are looking for.

Up here it really is different, and we look forward to welcoming you to the shores of the Swilly, to discover what sets us apart for yourself.

In the new section of the house, the rooms have a contemporary feel with balcony or patio and some even with their own electric fire which provides a warm relief in the cold winter months.
In the old section of the house, the grand superior rooms allow you to step back to the early 19th century and admire the original features, traditional décor and landscape around Rathmullan House which has remained much the same for generations.

Each of our standard rooms radiates character and has its own distinctive décor. Handpicked antiques accumulated by the house over the past 250 years add a sense of the history of the house to each bedroom.
Our standard rooms vary in size with some being particularly spacious while others have scintillating views of the lough or gardens. All bathrooms have a bath and shower and an excellent night’s sleep is a certainty in our luxurious double or twin beds.

Restaurant

Our award winning Cook & Gardener Restaurant provides the perfect setting to enjoy locally sourced food cooked to the highest standards. With views stretching out over Lough Swilly, a tented ceiling dotted with hundreds of fairy lights and classic wooden floors, the ambiance alone allows you to instantly unwind as soon as you take your seat.

The Cook & Gardener is about more than just the setting, as the name suggests. When you dine with us, you will see fish landed from Greencastle, meat supplied by local butchers and vegetables straight from our walled garden on your menu. We are proud of our position in the heart of our small community and will continue to work with local suppliers wherever possible.

Our menu is updated regularly depending on what has just been landed in Greencastle or which vegetables are in season in the garden. What you can be sure of is that the seafood will be fresh, the vegetables will be local and each dish will have that signature touch from our team of chefs.
